Flow, Return & Turnover: Sizing Pumps for Your Reef

Flow is the quiet hero of a reef tank. It carries food to coral, sweeps waste off the rock, and keeps oxygen and parameters even everywhere. Too little and detritus settles and coral starves; too much and you sandblast everything. Here's how to get it right.

Two pumps, two jobs

The return pump lives in your sump and pushes water up to the display, then gravity drains it back. It sets your turnover — how many times the whole tank cycles through filtration per hour.

Powerheads (wavemakers) live in the display and make the in-tank current that actually moves water around your rock. They do the heavy lifting on flow; the return mostly handles filtration turnover.

The numbers that matter

Return / turnover: aim for roughly 5–10× your tank volume per hour through the sump. A 50g tank wants a return doing ~250–500 GPH at its actual head height.
Total in-tank flow: aim for 20–40× tank volume per hour combined (return + powerheads). Soft corals like the low end; SPS like the high end.

Straight talk — Pump boxes quote "max flow" — the number with zero pipe attached. Real-world output drops fast as it pushes water up to the display (that's "head loss"). Assume a return pump delivers noticeably less than its rating once it's plumbed, and size up accordingly. A DC pump helps here because you can turn it up.

Placing your flow

Aim powerheads to cross or bounce off each other rather than blasting a single spot — you want a random, swirling current, not a fire hose. Watch your sand: a small ripple is good, a bare patch means you're pointing too hard at the bottom. Watch your coral: it should sway, not whip. Adjust over a few days until detritus stops settling anywhere.

Reefer's tip — Most controllable powerheads have a "feed mode" that pauses flow for a few minutes so food doesn't get blown everywhere at dinnertime. Use it — your corals and your wallet will thank you.
