How to Choose a Protein Skimmer (Without Overthinking It)

A protein skimmer is the hardest-working piece of filtration on a reef — and one of the most over-thought purchases in the hobby. Here's how it works, how to size it right, and what to buy without falling down a forum rabbit hole.

What a skimmer does

Saltwater plus fine bubbles plus organic waste equals foam — and that foam carries dissolved gunk out of your water before it breaks down into nitrate and phosphate. In plain terms: a skimmer pulls waste out the front door instead of letting it rot in the tank. Cleaner water, more oxygen, less algae fuel. On a fish-heavy or SPS reef, it's close to essential.

Straight talk — Skimmers shine on bigger, well-fed tanks. On a small nano (under ~20 gallons), frequent water changes often do the same job with less fuss — and many AIO nanos don't have room for one anyway. Don't let anyone guilt you into a skimmer your tank doesn't need yet.

The one sizing rule worth knowing

Rule of thumbBuy a skimmer rated for at least 1.5× your tank's total water volume, then look at how heavily it's stocked. A lightly-stocked 75g and a fish-packed 75g are not the same job. When in doubt, size up — an oversized skimmer running gently outperforms a small one gasping at its limit.

Manufacturer ratings are optimistic, which is exactly why the 1.5× buffer exists. Also check the footprint — a skimmer has to physically fit your sump, and the tall ones need height clearance to pull the cup.

Nano & budget (up to ~50g)

Internal, external, AC or DC?

In-sump (INT) skimmers sit in your sump and suit the vast majority of reefs — start here. DC pumps cost a little more but let you tune and quiet the skimmer from a dial (or app), and they sip less power. AC pumps are simpler and cheaper and still excellent. Neither is wrong; DC is a convenience upgrade, not a requirement.

Reefer's tip — A new skimmer foams like crazy for the first week or two, then settles down — that's normal break-in, not a fault. Give it time before you start fiddling with the adjustment.
