Spend ten minutes in planted-tank forums and you'll hit the great divide: low-tech vs. high-tech. It sounds like a skill tier, but it's really one decision — whether you add pressurized CO2 — and everything else follows from it. Here's the honest comparison.

The one variable: carbon

Plants build themselves out of carbon, and they get it from CO2 dissolved in the water. A low-tech tank relies on the small amount of CO2 that occurs naturally. A high-tech tank injects pressurized CO2 to give plants far more of their main building block — which, paired with strong light and ferts, unlocks dramatically faster growth and the demanding "carpet" plants.
