Reef Automation 101: Controllers, ATO & Dosing Explained
Automation is what turns reef keeping from a daily chore into a hobby you enjoy — and a safety net for when life gets in the way. But you don't need a full controller on day one. Here's the order that actually makes sense, and what to buy at each step.

1. Auto top-off — start here
As water evaporates, salt stays behind and your salinity creeps up — and salinity swings stress everything. An ATO automatically replaces evaporated water with fresh RO/DI, holding salinity rock-steady around the clock. It's cheap, it's easy, and it removes the most constant source of drift in a reef. If you automate one thing, automate this.

2. Monitoring & safety
You can't react to what you can't see. Even without a full controller, a few inexpensive guardians prevent the disasters that wipe out tanks: a stuck heater, a leak behind the stand, an overnight power cut.

3. Dosing
